The cost of managing Britain’s electricity supplies could double to £2billion a year within five years, according to reports.
The increase in cost is predicted to be impacted by the growth of renewable technologies.
A senior National Grid official has made the forecast as fresh figures reveal the company already spends more than £1billion a year on “balancing services” to ensure power supply and demand are both matched.
Julian Lesie, head of electricity network development at National Grid, said: “At the moment we are spending around £1billion a year and ever increasing, I think personally by the next five years or so that will be £2billion a year.”
