ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) has assisted in the sailaway of one the world’s largest offshore substations.
The module, named Andalucia, left Cadiz this weekend on the way to the Baltic Sea, where it will be installed as part of Spanish utility firm Iberdrola’s 1.4billion euro Wikinger wind farm.
The wind farm, which will consist of 70 turbines and occupy 34 square kilometres, is slated to go online at the end of 2017.
Navantia built the 4,550tonne Andalucia substation at the Puerto Real shipyard.
It is thought to be the first offshore substation built with two topsides.
German electricity system operator 50Hertz will use one of the two topsides to support further offshore wind developments.
SPR is a subsidiary of Iberdrola and leads the company’s global offshore developments from Glasgow and London.
Wikinger has also created work for Banchory-based engineering firm Ecosse Subsea Systems, which is carrying out pre-cut seabed trenching and route clearance as part of the project.
