Costa Rica has powered its electricity grid for over 100 days entirely by renewable energy and now plans to continue the trend for a whole year.
The Latin American country is now planning to run for a year on renewable energy aiming for a year without fossil fuels.
In 2015, renewable energy sources accounted for 99% of the country’s electricity and 285 days were powered completely by renewable sources.
The main sources of renewable energy have come from hydroelectric power plants as well as a combination of wind, solar and geothermal energy.
The move by Costa Rica is in trend with a number of other countries including Denamrk which last year supplied 140% of demand.
The achievement was dubbed as “the key to stop global warming”.
