The nuclear industry is being largely ignored during the election campaign even though it faces a “perfect storm”, it is claimed.
Politicians were urged to spend more time discussing nuclear power, especially as almost half of its capacity is due to end by 2025.
The Prospect union said Brexit was throwing up a number of questions for the sector, including the Government’s decision to leave the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom).
General secretary Mike Clancy said: “Storm clouds are gathering and we need the certainty and active involvement of any future government to deliver the skills and investment the sector needs.
“A perfect storm is casting a shadow over the nuclear industry, yet the issue remains largely ignored in the General Election.
“Given the scale of challenges facing the UK with Brexit, renewing our energy infrastructure and meeting our climate targets, this is worrying.
“It is also why our politicians need to talk about nuclear power.”
