Malin Marine Consultants (MMC) in Aberdeen will build an offshore buoy for a groundbreaking renewable energy project off Holyhead.
Deep Green, led by Sweden’s Minesto, has been described as the world’s first low-velocity tidal energy project.
Welsh authorities recently gave Minesto permission to install one of its tidal generators about eight miles off Anglesey.
The devices, which are similar in appearance to Spitfire fighter aircraft, are tethered to the seafloor but can move around like kites.
MMC’s 100-tonne buoy contains a micro grid system which will be hooked up to the generator.
It will be used to test the device’s commercial potential.
Installation is expected later this year and the buoy should remain on site for about five years.
MMC is part of Glasgow-headquartered Malin Group, which was established as Henry Abram in 1899 and which employs about 50 people in Scotland.
Graham Tait, managing director at MMC in Aberdeen, said: “This contract utilises the full capability within Malin Group including in-house design, fabrication and delivery.
“We continue to work closely with our client Minesto on this interesting and challenging project.”
Minesto offshore operations manager Simon Mills said: “We are very pleased to work with Malin Group and with the cross-section of services that they provide.
“Given the way they have responded in the procurement process, with a flexible, supportive dialogue and well-resourced technical feedback, they certainly seem like a well-motivated and highly competent partner to Minesto.”
