Burlington in the state of Vermont has made history by becoming the first American city to power itself on 100% renewable energy.
Known for it’s beautiful climate and countryside, the city has taken a stand against climate change by powering all it’s energy needs through nothing but renewables.
The former mayoral patch of political activist and environmentalist, Bernie Sander, the city can now hold it’s head high as a progressive city acting against climate change.
The current mayor, Miro Weinberger, said of Burlington: “We are walled off, insulated from the volatility of the gas and oil markets because we’re just not relying on those markets to power the city.”
Neale Lunderville, general manager of Burlington Electric, a publicly owner and run organisation, said:
“Vermont depends on having four distinct wonderful seasons to attract tourists and provide this awesome quality of life,” Lunderville said. “We believe that climate change will wreck that and that’s one of the reasons we’re working so hard to protect Vermont now and into the future.”
