The south-west of England now has access to a public fund aimed at helping communities raise awareness of climate change.
A total of £50,000 is available from the Megawatt Community Energy Fund to go towards projects around Bristol and surrounding areas that highlight the issues, lessen fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions of individuals, organisations or communities.
The funding programme recycles the profit from the green businesses of Bristol Energy Cooperative (BEC) and looks to reinvest it in the local economy.
The money is open to groups or projects working in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, and Sedgemoor District, with applications open from August 1 to September 26 2017.
BEC co-director, Chris Speller said: “We are delighted to announce the first round of Bristol Energy Cooperative’s Megawatt Community Energy Fund.
“As a community-owned organisation, we are committed to using profit from our growing energy business to provide benefit for the local area and wider environment.
“We look forward to receiving applications from a wide range of organisations and supporting them to do more good work.”
BEC, an organisation run under community-ownership, has 11 rooftop installations which produce an output large enough to power 2,220 homes within the local area (9,105MW).
