GMB, the energy workers’ union, warned renewable-energy subsides will add £10 a week to household energy bills.
It called for the handouts to be paid for through general taxation, as well as an investigation into a “bonkers wind-power rip off racket” in Scotland.
According to the GMB, the UK’s 27million households pay for windfarms not producing electricity which may be “just the tip of the iceberg”.
It said UK Government figures showed the subsidy element of energy bills may treble to £10 per week within five years, adding: “Electricity is a natural monopoly and in this case the public are being milked by paying twice over – through spiralling consumer energy bills and taxpayer hand-outs.”
