Italian firm Saipem has confirmed that it will transport and install four transformer platforms for the Hornsea Project One wind farm development starting next month.
As developer Ørsted begins construction work, Saipem is currently doing preparatory turbine construction work as the Saipem 7000 semi-submersible crane vessel is moored in Cartagena, Spain.
Due to begin work on April 20, the vessel will head first to Rotterdam for mobilisation before heading to the Hornsea development site off Yorkshire.
Paolo Formica, Saipem offshore area manager for the North Sea, confirmed that this was part of his firm’s “growing presence in the UK” and that “in the next few years most of our work will be concentrated in the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS).”
A Saipem spokesman also described it as part of the company’s ongoing transition into offshore wind and “very much business as usual” for the firm.
The Hornsea One has been billed as the largest in the world, producing enough clean electricity for 1 million homes.
Gulf Marine Services (GMS) has been contracted by owner and developer Ørsted to provide accommodation vessels for wind farm technicians.
