Vattenfall has released footage of the giant Asian Hercules crane vessel installing the first turbine foundation for the Aberdeen Bay wind farm.
The vessel is one of the largest cranes of its kind in the world, weighing 25,000 tonnes and with a lift capacity of 5,000 tonnes.
Yesterday it lifted the 1,800-tonne steel jacket foundation into place off the coast of Aberdeen.
The windfarm, otherwise known as the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC), will trial next generation technology and, once constructed, will generate the equivalent of 70% of Aberdeen’s domestic electricity demand and annually displace 132,977 tonnes of CO2.
