Scores of redundant electricity pylons are being levelled in the final phase of work in the Far North on a £1.1billion scheme to upgrade the mains power network between Caithness and Moray.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is spearheading the venture, which will provide extra capacity for new wind and marine energy developments.
A network of 97 steel pylons has been built to carry the new 275 kilovolt overhead line between Dounreay and a sub-station at Mybster.
The project has involved the laying of more than 16 miles of access roads and 31 miles of fencing.
Work has just started on removing the redundant 132kv line and its network of smaller pylons.
A spokeswoman for SSEN said: “Four of the towers have been cut, felled and sheared into sections for disposal.
“The foundations for these will be removed in close consultation with landowners.
“Our contractors, Balfour Beatty, will continue with the tower felling and foundation removal over the coming weeks from Spittal back to the old Thurso substation and then in June we will remove the towers between Dounreay and the old Thurso sub-station.”
