James Fisher and Sons has said it is cementing its offshore renewables business by opening a second marine energy facility in England.
The marine service firm’s Fendercare Marine subsidiary is looking to open the new offshore marine energy operations and maintenance facility in Great Yarmouth in early 2012.
It follows the launch of the group’s first renewable energy support Base in Lyness, Orkney, in 2010 to support wave and tidal-energy developers.
The latest facility will provide a range of support services and equipment to the expanding offshore wind industry and associated supply chain in the area.
It will have a large set down and storage area, quay side frontage and office facilities.
“Many companies with vessels in the southern North Sea are finding it difficult to locate suitable facilities to carry out both scheduled and emergency maintenance” said Tim Smith, Fendercare’s renewables sales manager.
He added: “In some cases owners and operators are being forced to return their vessels to mainland Europe to complete these service requirements, resulting in reduced operational efficiency and project over-runs.
“This is a situation that can only be exacerbated with the significant increase in vessels anticipated to service operations and maintenance requirements of existing installations, round two extensions and new round three projects.”
