Energy firm Enel confirmed yesterday that it had installed Peru’s largest wind farm making it the largest renewable producer in the South American country.
The completed 132MW Wayra I wind farm is a 42 turbine onshore development located in Marcona, in the Ica Region.
The £144 million project is Enel’s first wind farm in Peru, but takes its total renewable energy capacity in the country to 1.1GW.
Wayra I is expected to produce approximately 600 GWh per year, enough to offset the annual emission of over 285,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
The project is supported by a 20-year energy supply contract with Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines and will be operated by Enel subsiduary Enel Green Power Peru ((EGPP)
Antonio Cammisecra, head of Enel’s Global Renewable Energies Division Enel Green Power (EGP), said: “With the entry into service of Wayra I, which follows the commissioning of solar plant Rubì, Enel Green Power has now completed and connected to the grid around 94% of the capacity awarded in Peru’s fourth public renewables tender, delivering on schedule on the committed targets and becoming a sector leader in the country.
“This is just a first step for scaling up renewables in Peru.”
