Highland communities have benefited from local wind farms to the tune of £1.64 million, claims a new report by renewables developer SSE.
Over a year term from 2017 to 2018, SSE claim that 196 local Highland projects delivered over £1.6 million in community benefits.
Funds have been distributed as part of a commitment made by SSE when bidding for renewables projects since 2002, with funding decisions taken by independent community panels or trusts.
The total benefit fund for the UK over 2017/18 was more than £5m.
SSE Head of Sustainability Rachel McEwen said: “This year has been the most successful year yet for SSE’s community funds with over £5.1m of community investment funds available.
“It’s fantastic to see the work the funds have supported and we’re delighted to play an instrumental role in bringing these projects to fruition.
“I would like to thank the countless people in the Highlands who give up their time freely to sit on our panels or volunteer for their local Trust.
“Every single individual contributes to the success of our funds and without you I am in no doubt that SSE’s community funds would not have the success they do.”
Caithness Citizen’s Advice Bureau were awarded £50,000 to allow hospital patients access to advice and support during and after a hospital stay.
Iain Gregory, manager at Caithness CAB, said: “The funding from the Beatrice Partnership Fund has enabled us to provide transformational change to the lives of many people who would otherwise have suffered deprivation and hardship.”
