BP is taking on hire the rig Maersk Discoverer, which is being released from contract almost a year early by Woodside Petroleum, which was using the semi-submersible to drill on the Pluto project in the Carnarvon Basin, offshore Western Australia.
The rig’s owner, Maersk, said the rig will be released early in 2012 instead of at the end of the year, freeing it up for BP, which is taking the unit on a four-year charter, with an option for a further year.
Core contract value is around $780million and the rig will initially go on deployment in the Mediterranean, working offshore Egypt.
