A WINDFARM planned for east Caithness could net a £1million windfall for North Highland College if it gets the go-ahead.
The proposed tie-up with Whirlwind Renewables will be signed at the college’s Thurso campus today.
The Yorkshire-based windfarm firm already has planning consent for five turbines at Wathegar on ground about five miles west of Wick.
The new deal centres on a second 18MW scheme of nine turbines which could provide power for 13,000 homes.
If Whirlwind gets the go-ahead, the company has pledged to fund between £30,000 and £50,000 a year in support of the college’s renewable energy activities.
The backing for skills development in the green energy sector would continue over the scheduled 30-year life of the windfarm. Whirlwind is also to put up an annual prize worth £500 to a renewable energy student.
