One of the world’s leading oil and gas logistics companies is giving a helping hand to the campaign to bring a Maggie’s cancer centre to the north-east.
Asco, which has bases in Aberdeen and Peterhead, has named the Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal as its charity of the year for 2012.
Bosses got the venture off to a flying start with a £5,000 donation to the campaign’s fundraiser, Nicola Watson.
Over the next 12 months staff plan to get involved in a series of fundraising events, including bowling and quiz nights and a 12-mile extreme obstacle course.
The money will go towards the £3million campaign being fronted by Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres and the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation.
Aberdeen is the only major Scottish city not to have a Maggie’s centre at present and the Press and Journal is supporting the bid.
Marie Williamson, spokeswoman for the Asco fundraisers, said the appeal was a popular choice.
“We all know someone who has been affected by cancer and our staff at Asco in Aberdeen and Peterhead are very proud to play their part in establishing a cancer caring centre in the north-east for future generations,” she added.
Organisers of the Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal announced at the start of this year that they were halfway to their fundraising target.
Norwegian architects Snohetta has submitted plans for the centre – to be built at Foresterhill between the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and Westburn Road – to the city council.
It is due to open in 2013.
Maggie’s has teamed up with the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation -the charity set up by golfer Colin Montgomerie in memory of his mother, who died from the disease – to raise the £3million needed for the development.
Previous Asco charities of the year have included the Archie Foundation, Clan and most recently Children 1st, which received £22,000 during 2011.
