US renewable-energy firm Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) said yesterday it had appointed Timothy Stiven as managing director of its UK business.
Mr Stiven, who takes up the post on Thursday, joined OPT in 2010 as director of business development and marketing for Europe. He replaces Angus Norman who is stepping down as chief executive of the UK business for personal reasons.
New Jersey-based OPT said Mr Norman would be maintaining a role with the firm by serving on its board of advisers. The firm is behind the PowerBuoy wave-energy device, a version of which is being tested at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney.
Meanwhile, a gear engineering and manufacturing company has been confirmed as the first successful bidder to a UK Government scheme to support manufacturers developing next-generation offshore wind technology.
David Brown Gear Systems, which has a facility at Huddersfield, has been awarded a £1.2million grant to help develop its 7-megawatt offshore wind-turbine gearbox which will be used for Samsung Heavy Industries’ new turbine.
The gearbox, through its low weight and compact design, can improve cost of ownership and ultimately lower the cost of energy for wind-turbine operators.
