Swedish utility Vattenfall said today it would develop a wave energy project offshore Orkney with the European Marine Energy Centre (Emec).
The firm said it would operate 10 Pelamis Wave Power energy devices with a total capacity of 10MW.
It comes after Vattenfall took the last wave berth at Emec’s Billia Croo facility near Stromness to test one of Pelamis’ energy converters.
If the tests are successful, Vattenfall plans to use the Pelamis device in its proposed Aegir project off Shetland.
Karl Bergman, head of research and development at Vattenfall, said: “Vattenfall wants to focus on wave energy to support the transition to renewable energy with low carbon dioxide emissions.
“It requires safe and reliable technology.”
