Details of a new £9.5million wave and tidal test centre in Edinburgh are on show in Aberdeen today at the All-Energy exhibition.
The circular 82-foot pool being built by FloWave TT – a subsidiary of Edinburgh University – will be able to simulate combinations of waves of up to 92ft and currents up to 12 knots at up to one-tenth scale; conditions that are currently unavailable to device developers and engineers.
The All-Waters Combined Current and Wave Test Facility, funded by the university with a grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, is being constructed at its King’s Buildings campus and has been led by Professor Ian Bryden, head of the institute for energy systems at Edinburgh University.
New chief executive Stuart Brown, formerly senior engineer at Sgurr Energy, will see it opened next year, when it will be available for academic and industry research as well as by firms wanting to test submersible devices, remotely operated vehicles, offshore wind installation and service vessels and other marine tools.
