Power firm EDF Energy will supply Scotland’s public-sector bodies with electricity under a new £200million-a-year deal.
The agreement will, from April 2, 2013, see EDF supply around 2.7 terawatt hours annually to council offices, hospitals, schools, most universities and Scottish Government buildings.
More than 27,000 sites included in the three-year deal account for roughly 10% of Scotland’s annual electricity consumption, or the equivalent of powering in excess of 800,000 typical households each year, said EDF. The firm added it would match every unit of electricity supplied under the agreement with power generated from renewable sources. According to EDF, this means a vast range of buildings will be powered “entirely with low-carbon electricity from renewable sources”.
The framework agreement is the outcome of a tender process run by Scottish Procurement, an agency within the government, which aims to deliver greater value for money in public spending across Scotland. EDF chief executive Vincent de Rivaz said they were proud the Scottish Government had placed its trust in them to supply power.
