An Aberdeen energy consultant says the UK Government could more than double its offshore wind target for 2020.
In its Renewable Energy Road Map, the government has said it hopes to get 18 gigawatts (GW) of power from offshore wind by 2020, however, Senergy says there could be as much as 38GW.
Its study looked at development plans and grid-connection capacities of all current and future offshore wind-energy projects across the UK. This showed the 18GW target could be surpassed as early as 2017.
Government estimates have already put the range of power expected from offshore wind at between 10 and 26GW by 2020.
This would be to meet the 2009 Renewable Energy Directive target for the UK to achieve 15% of its energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020.
