Electricity generated by renewable sources in Scotland is significantly reducing the nation’s harmful carbon dioxide emissions, according to new figures.
The latest figures show renewable electricity has displaced 8.36million tonnes of CO2, or 15% of the country’s total carbon emissions. Experts say that is equivalent to removing 3.5million cars from the roads.
Joss Blamire, senior policy manager of Scottish Renewables, said the figures were proof that the country’s renewables industry was becoming one of the most effective weapons in tackling climate change, while Dr Richard Dixon, director of WWF Scotland, said the industry was making “a huge difference” to Scotland’s emissions.
