Britain is on track to meet European renewable-energy targets, according to UK Government figures out yesterday.
The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said renewable-energy generation increased by 27% in the year to July, providing more than 3.8% of all electricity consumed in the UK.
The figures came in the first update to the government’s renewables roadmap, aimed at helping the nation to achieve a European target of having 15% of all energy consumed generated from green sources by 2020.
DECC’s report also said investment of £12.7billion in the sector between April 1, 2011, and July 31, 2012, was expected to create about 22,800 jobs.
Maf Smith, deputy chief executive of industry body RenewablesUK, said the update was spot on, adding: “It highlights the sector’s dynamic growth and the healthy pipeline of wind, wave and tidal projects to come.”
