A communications advisor at Shell has been named as the new CEO of Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG).
David Rodger, who spent nine years with the oil giant, will take on the top job on October 1 in a new role for the supply chain organisation, currently led by chair Jean Morrison.
Mr Rodger previously spent four years with AREG as communications manager before joining Vattenfall in 2009, where he supported development of the Clashindarroch onshore wind farm near Huntly, and the Aberdeen Bay Wind Farm, of which AREG was a driving partner.
He said: “Despite leaving more than a decade ago, I’ve continued to be heavily involved through advisory groups and supported the organisation at every opportunity.
“There has been enormous change in that time but we’re now entering another exciting phase for renewable energy in Scotland, and I can’t wait to be part of that with AREG as we grow the organisation to champion both the production and use of low carbon energy – right across industries, communities and homes.”
AREG is a non-profit organisation with more than 190 members, first set up in 2001 before being formally established two years later, aiming to build up north-east Scotland as a “world-leading centre of excellence” for renewables.
Mr Rodger, who spent more than 20 years as a civil servant earlier in his career, said a priority will be ensuring the local supply chain can “take advantage of the exciting opportunities” arising in floating wind, hydrogen and wave power as the industry works towards net zero.
His appointment comes as regions across the country, including Aberdeen, seek to capitalise on the burgeoning offshore wind sector, as the government aims to quadruple capacity across the UK to 40GW.
