Former energy minister Brian Wilson has blasted as “a shambles” plans to carry green energy from windfarms in the north.
Demand for wind, wave and tidal power has already seen the controversial £600million Beauly-Denny transmission line fully booked up before it is even built.
The renewable boom is also seeing an upgrade of the line between north of Aberdeen and the south of Scotland as well as £246million of works around Beauly and its links to Dounreay, Mossford, Blackhillock and Kintore.
Mr Wilson, a strong supporter of renewable energy, said there was no coherent strategy covering both generation and transmission. He added: “The whole thing is a shambles. There are vast potential assets in places where renewable energy should be developed and windfarms where nobody except the developers want them.
“There should have been clear priorities for utilising the Beauly to Denny link instead of it being filled on a first-come, first-served basis by whoever could get planning permission.”
He also questioned the role of SSE and Scottish Power.
