The renewables division of RWE has secured a 10-year contract for operations, service and maintenance at the London Array wind farm.
RWE won the contract to service the 175-turbine, 630 megawatt (MW) London Array scheme, 12 miles off the coast of Kent. It is maintained and operated from the Port of Ramsgate
Delivery of the new maintenance contract will begin in 2023 and run for the next decade.
Shareholders in the project – once the world’s largest offshore wind farm – include RWE itself (30%), Orsted (25%), Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ, 25%) and Masdar (20%).
RWE said a tender process had been conducted over the past year to explore if there was a more efficient way to deliver the range of services needed at the project.
The group already operates eight offshore wind farms in the UK and a further five across Europe on behalf of itself and its partners.
It has over 1.3GW of operational capacity with a further 6.5GW of offshore capacity under construction or development. This includes the Triton Knoll offshore wind farm, currently in construction off the coast of Lincolnshire and the 1.4GW Sofia offshore wind farm.
RWE says this makes it “well positioned” to offer services to the London Array.
It is currently progressing four extension projects in the UK, with a combined potential installed capacity of around 3.1 GW (of which its share amounts to 1.6 GW).
Most recently, it secured bids for two new adjacent offshore sites on Dogger Bank, with a potential total installed capacity of 3GW, in The Crown Estate’s Offshore Wind Round 4 Leasing auction.
RWE Renewables director of offshore wind operations, Thomas Michel, said: “Being selected as O&M service provider for London Array Offshore Wind Farm is a fantastic demonstration of our renewable expertise. Colleagues from across our offshore business and wider support functions all played their part in securing our success.”
