A new survey looking at the best way for offshore wind projects to transmit power has been launched by the Crown Estate.
The project, which will work with windfarm developers and transmission system owners is aimed at establishing a best practice for connecting turbines to the grid.
“The UK has one of the best offshore wind resources in the world but how far we can exploit this potential will depend on a range of factors, one of the most important of which is continuing to drive down costs,” said the Crown Estate’s head of new energy, Martin Simpson.
“Sharing learning and examples of best practice will allow industry to explore solutions that might make transmission more cost effective, bringing down overall project costs and making investment decisions more attractive.”
DNV GL are to oversee the study, which is now canvasing views ahead of presenting its results next spring. A panel from the Institution of Engineering and Technology will peer review the findings.
