A UK wind turbine manufacturer is to provide off-grid energy for the Azores’ Santa Maria airport.
Evance Wind Turbines has installed a 5kW wind turbine, 6kW solar panel and a control room with a large battery bank for energy storage after agreeing a deal with NAV Portugal, the Portuguese air navigation services provider.
The energy generated will be used to power the instrument landing system at the airport.
“We are seeing an increase in the level of interest in renewable energy in Portugal,” said Luis Marinho, chief executive of WindUp, the Evance reseller in Portugal.
“Across the country many businesses have assets in remote locations so see the potential commercial and environmental benefits for off-grid renewable energy systems.”
