The wind power industry has been given a boost after smashing the record for the amount of British electricity generated for the second time in three months.
As high winds hit the UK, wind-generated electricity for the National Grid hit a peak of 783,886megawatt hours – 13% of the UK’s total power need for the week.
December 21 saw an individual daily output of 132,812MWh, around 17% of the UK’s demand, with 10% of the country’s power demand being met by wind provision through the month – up from the previous 8% record set in October.
The figures were welcomed by green energy industry body Renewable UK.
“In December, we generated more electricity from wind for British homes and businesses than during any other month on record – and we also hit weekly and daily highs,” said deputy chief executive Maf Smith.
“This gives us a great sense of confidence for the year ahead, when we will continue to increase the amount of clean power we generate from wind, onshore and offshore.
