Energy group Dong could use more powerful wind turbines for their expansion of a major UK windfarm project.
The Danish firm has agreed a deal to use new 8MW turbines for the Burbo Bank extension, as part of a bid to cut offshore wind costs by up to 40%.
The larger turbines require fewer foundations and produce more energy, with the Dong deal marking the first bulk order for the new turbine type.
“The performance of the 8MW turbine from Vestas is very promising,” said Dong vice president Samuel Luepold.
“I see this as a very concrete step towards reducing the cost of electricity from offshore wind. A competitive market for all components is essential to accomplishing this.”
The expansion would generate a further 258MW at the windfarm, whch currently has a total capacity of 90MW and uses 25 turbines with around half the power of the new units.
The deal depends on the windfarm project, which is located in Liverpool Bay, securing a Contract for Difference.
