Four major renewable power industry players have been named as lead sponsors for the body representing ocean energy interests across the EU.
GDF Suez, ScottishPower, Siemens and Scottish Development International will serve as lead sponsors for the Ocean Energy Europe group, which represents dozens of renewables firms across the continent.
The Brussels-based trade body is looking to generate more than £400million in financial support for ocean renewables research.
“We are delighted to have such major industrialists and development agencies join Ocean Energy Europe,” said Ocean Energy chief executive Sian George.
“It is clearly indicative of the momentum the sector continues to gain. Commercialising ocean energy will require EU support and industry cooperation, and today’s announcement shows that the industry has recognised that.”
The group links together businesses, research institutes and engineering firms along with energy utilities firms to represent the growing tidal energy industry.
“Ocean energy has an important role to play in Scotland’s future energy mix, and with a quarter of Europe’s potential tidal energy resource and 10% of its potential wave resource, Scotland has a key role in the development of the industry in Europe,” said Sharon Hamilton of Scottish Development International
“We believe that it is important for the development of the ocean energy industry in Europe that it speaks with one coherent voice. By supporting Ocean Energy Europe we aim to keep Scotland and Europe at the forefront of ocean energy development.”
