UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has published the EU’s first Solar Strategy, designed to take the development of the green power generation in the UK to the next level.
Key targets of the new strategy, which focuses on popularising rooftop solar panels, include provision of solar power to one million homes by 2015, up from half a million today.
It also sets out the target of 20GW electricity produced by solar by 2020, but adds “the ability to achieve such a high level of deployment will be predicated by a number of factors. These include available budget within the levy control framework”.
Cost reductions resulting from the measures will allow homes and businesses to choose an alternative to the Big Six energy suppliers, the strategy board claimed.
“Solar has not only been recognised by DECC as a key UK technology, but now has its own dedicated strategy – the first in Europe,” said Paul Barwell, chief executive of Solar Trade Association who chaired the Engagement Task Force which contributed to outlining the strategy.
“It’s a clever move by the UK Government to start strategising to maximise its stake in a global market estimated at $134 billion by 2020.
“The industry couldn’t be keener to work with DECC to realise the benefits of solar power for householders and for UK.”
