A boss of wind power giants Dong Energy is to serve as co-chair of the Government’s offshore wind industry council, it has been revealed.
Benj Sykes, country manager for Dong’s wind power division, will replace ScottishPower chief corporate officer Keith Anderson at the helm of the body set up to drive offshore wind development and bring down costs for the industry.
He will serve alongside energy minister Michael Fallon, who also co-chairs the group.
“The skills and experience that Benj brings are a real boost to the Offshore Wind Industry Council following the excellent work of the previous co-chair, Keith Anderson,” said Mr Fallon.
“The UK is currently the best country in the world to invest in offshore wind. I’m looking forward to working closely with Benj to continue to build a competitive and innovative UK offshore wind sector that brings jobs, exports and economic benefits for the UK.”
Mr Sykes was previously director of innovation with the Carbon Trust before joining Dong, with time before that working in the oil and gas sector at the Hess Corporation.
“OWIC has an important job in helping to drive the UK’s offshore wind industry forward,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to taking on this exciting and challenging role, and working closely with Government and the members of OWIC to drive down the cost of offshore wind and deliver a competitive and diversified supply chain, ensuring that offshore wind delivers on its potential to play a vital role in the UK’s energy mix for many years to come.”
