Internet giants Google are to make their largest investment into renewable energy to date after striking a deal to support one of their US data centres.
The agreement with Us firm MidAmerica Energy will see Google’s data centre for the state receiving 407MW of energy sourced from renewable wind.
“This agreement will not only cover our current facilities but will allow for future expansion supplied by renewable energy as well,” the internet firm said.
“This is our seventh and largest renewable energy commitment to date, bringing the total amount of renewable energy we’ve contracted for to over one gigawatt.”
The deal, announced as part of Earth Day celebrations, is the latest investment in a multi-billion dollar series of investments made by the company in recent months in renewable energy.
Last year it announced it would spend more than $100million on a solar farm in California as the company looked to find green energy solutions for its high-powered data centres.
