Energy Minister Fergus Ewing today said independence would elevate Scotland from the boot to the driver’s seat in the renewable industry.
He said: “If the energy policy is a car that’s being driven by the UK team we are either in the backseat of the car or sometimes even in the boot with no ability to set the direction of the car, to decide the navigation of the route we want to travel to.
“With independence we have dual controls in that car. We will be a co-driver.”
However, later in the day the Minister squared-up to Labour MP Frank Doran in an independence debate, forming part of the All-Energy 2014 conference programme.
Doran criticised Ewing’s opening speech as being policy light.
He said: “When we look at base figures on which energy policy has been developed they begin to melt.”
Doran went on to tell delegates at the All-Energy conference the SNP’s view on Scotland’s energy future in an independent Scotland is full of aspirations and general wishes but contains few facts.
