Scottish renewable energy firm Pelamis has reached a connectivity milestone as its wave power generators clocked up 10,000 hours of collective operation.
The two P2 machines are currently undergoing testing at the Billia Croo wave test site, at European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, as the firm is looking to develop the technology on a commercial scale.
The Scottish islands’ violent waters allowed for the machines to be tested against waves of almost 10metres and bursts of power in excess of 2MW.
The machines generated an average of 30 minute electrical output of over 280kW,which transmitted directly to the national grid.
“Every milestone is important in our programme but hitting 10,000 hours on P2 is a big one,” said Richard Yemm, Pelamis’ chief executive.
“We have not only proven that Pelamis technology works, we have also now shown that it works reliably.
“This progress has been hard won and gives us a unique and solid platform of data and experience to push ahead with optimising the Pelamis system in parallel with ongoing trials.”
