Renewable energy firm EON has been given the go ahead from the UK Government to develop a 700MW offshore windfarm off the coast of Sussex.
Construction on the Rampion project is set to start in 2015 and take four years to complete, supporting around 750 jobs and bring more than £2billion of investment into the UK economy.
The windfarm will consist of between 100-175 turbines, each generating between 3MW and 7MW.
When complete in 2018/19, the site will generate more than 2,100GWh of electricity each year – enough to power approximately 450,000 homes.
“We’re driving investment in our energy security, and our plans have made us number one in the world for investment in offshore wind energy,” said Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey.
“This project is great news for Sussex, providing green jobs as well as driving business opportunities right across the country in a sector with a clear roadmap for long-term growth.”
