Completion of a meteorological mast has marked a ‘major milestone’ in the Moray Offshore Renewables (MORL) offshore wind zone.
The project in the outer Moray Firth is the first infrastructure to be installed on the site. With a height of 104m the mast will measure and record wind and other meteorological conditions. Its foundation is made from concrete caisson which stands on a rock on the seabed while the deck on top of the mast caries the measuring equipment.
The installation process minimised health and safety risks by using a telescopic hydraulic system instead of helicopters.
Dan Finch, MORL’s project director, said: “Fabrication of the mast itself was undertaken by Global Energy at Invergordon, demonstrating how the skills and enterprise of the local economy are already successfully in competing to take advantage of the new markets which offshore wind is bringing.
“The involvement of Drace and Global Energy has brought new entrants to the offshore wind supply chain, delivered new investment to the UK and demonstrated new and innovative techniques that can be used in full-scale offshore wind deployment.”
