Masdar will assist in the building of the first large-scale wind farm in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
The Abu Dhabi based company has signed an agreement with the Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAECO) to develop the $125million wind farm in the Sultante of Oman.
Made from 25 wind turbines, it’s thought that the 50-megawatt project will generate enough electricity to power 16,000 homes and cut back on 110,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, chairman of Masdar, said: “The Oman wind project is a prime example of how clean energy can deliver reliable power supplies and improve energy security, while also supporting a transition to a low carbon future.”
The news comes as Oman broadens its strategy to meet the country’s growing energy demand.
When the venture is completed in 2015 it will account for 7% of total installed power generation capacity in the area.
Eng Hamed al Magdheri, chief executive of REACO, said: “When completed, wind power will meet half of the Dhofar region’s energy needs during the winter.
“It will also reduce our reliance on traditional forms of energy, such as gas, which can be redirected toward more valuable industrial uses, while also extending the life of our hydrocarbon reserves.”
