British Gas plans to roll out smart meters across the UK has led to the company recruiting around 200 apprentices this year.
Scottish Gas will recruit around 30 apprentices north of the border.
The apprentices will join 1,400 Smart Energy Experts already installing smart meters in homes across Britain as the company completes the nationwide roll-out by 2020.
The new recruits will install the smart meters and explain to customers how to use the devices’ in-home displays, which shows how much energy is being used in pounds and pence and provide energy efficiency advice.
The meters provide accurate readings and allow customers to better understand their energy usage. It will also mean an end to estimated bills.
British Gas is currently trialling smart pay-as-you-go with customers who have pre-payment meters.
Around 1.5 million smart meters have already been installed in British homes – 117,000 of those in Scotland.
The new Scottish Gas recruits will receive technical training and will study for the City & Guilds Level 2 QCF diploma.
Scottish Gas has around 800,000 residential customers in Scotland and around 750,000 services customers. It employs around 3,000 people in Scotland with more than 900 engineers.
