Wood (LON:WG) has secured an award for front-end engineering design (FEED) for a new green hydrogen production facility in Mosjøen in northern Norway.
Proposed by green hydrogen-focused developer Gen2 Energy, the company has plans for two production facilities for large scale production and shipping of green hydrogen in the Nesbruket and Holandsvika areas of Mosjøen.
Under the first phase of the project, Gen2 Energy plans to build a 100MW plant with a continuous production of around 45 tonnes of green hydrogen per day. Mosjøen was chosen due to its access to low-priced electricity, making it an ideal location for large-scale electrolysis.
The sites are two of several more production facilities for green hydrogen the company intends to establish by the middle of the decade.
Aberdeen-headquartered Wood said the award would see it apply “decades” of hydrogen expertise and project capabilities to develop the 100MW plant – the first large-scale commercial green hydrogen production facility in Norway.
It follows initial conceptualisation work already carried out by the engineering giant, as well as other production facilities that Gen2 Energy is evaluating.
Wood’s vice president of Norway Lars Fredrik Bakke said: “We are excited to support Gen2 Energy and enable the acceleration of green hydrogen production in Norway. With our deep domain expertise in hydrogen projects, we are well positioned to support the delivery of large-scale production facilities which will play a critical role in enabling a transition to a lower carbon energy mix.”
The contract will be delivered by Wood’s existing teams in Norway, with support from the company’s global experts from within its operations and projects business units.
Wood will execute the FEED study jointly with personnel from Gen2 Energy.
Jonas Meyer, chief executive of the Norwegian hydrogen developer, said: “The contract with Wood represents a milestone in Gen2 Energy’s targeted work to realise large-scale production of green hydrogen in Norway. In close collaboration with Wood, we will build a facility that turns green hydrogen into a commercial product for markets in Norway and northern Europe. Gen2 Energy’s hydrogen expertise matches very well with Wood’s industrial project capabilities.”
Hydrogen is forming an increasing portion of the group’s business, with Wood last year securing more than 30 separate awards in the first half of the year.
Earlier this year it also secured a major award with Total Eren to engineer an entirely off-grid energy complex in Magallenes, Chile, which aims to produce ammonia from green hydrogen.
