US engineering firm Emerson has hosted a one-day workshop to show north-east pupils how maths is used in the oil and gas industry.
The students aged 14-15 from Northfield Academy, Fraserburgh Academy, Meldrum Academy, Kemnay Academy and The Gordon Schools attended the Maths in the Pipeline event, organised by charitable organisation TechFest.
The children had to solve problems while working as part of a team, and complete a “business challenge” that involved meeting deadlines and presenting.
TechFest managing director Sarah Chew said: “Maths in the Pipeline is a full day of workshops giving students a practical application of the maths they have learnt in school in an industry setting.
“The event encourages students to engage with industry professionals from local oil and gas companies, such as Emerson, and apply what they learn in school to solve problems tackled daily by these professionals.”
Deirdre Michie, chief executive of Oil and Gas UK, said: “Events like this Emerson workshop really help to connect with the engineers, scientists, technologists and mathematically adept workforce of tomorrow.
“Oil and gas may be experiencing a challenging time right now but it remains an exciting and innovative industry with opportunities that can take you all over the world.
“I certainly hope this event will have helped encourage some students to view our sector as a great career choice.”
