Aberdeen firm Motion Software will demonstrate how virtual reality (VR) technology can help with the inspection of oil and gas lifting equipment at an event in the north-east this week.
The firm, which provides a range of IT services for the oil and gas industry, will let delegates at the LiftEx 2016 exhibition in Aberdeen try out the gear for themselves.
Motion Software said VR can be used to check cranes from all angles before deciding whether parts need to be replaced.
Managing director Stephen Burt said the technology could help companies work more efficiently and reduce risk.
Mr Burt said: “We’ve seen how new technology is transforming the inspection and compliance sector. In an industry where there can be no room for error, a digital approach is driving up standards and reducing the time from inspection to report.
“We are constantly looking for ways to push boundaries and a key part of that is seeing how we can use proven technology from other disciplines. We’re really excited by the potential benefits virtual and augmented reality can bring to our industry.
“Being able to visualise equipment in detail before heading to the site is transformational. Planning and walking through the steps of lifting a crane offshore, for example, before heading offshore would reduce risk and improve the project’s success rate.”
LiftEx 2016 takes place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre tomorrow and on Thursday.
Organisers from the Lifting Equipment and Engineers Association describe it as the go-to event for the lifting industry.
