Pupils from Keith Grammar School will jet off to the US after being crowned champions during heats of a global competition held at Robert Gordon University (RGU).
The Scottish Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) event, which took place at the Aberdeen university, is one of 24 regional heats and the only one in the UK to be held around the world.
The competition is run by the MATE Centre in California.
Keith beat off Alford Academy, Banff Academy, Craigmount High School from Edinburgh, Inverurie Academy, Mintlaw Academy, Peterhead Academy, Portlethen Academy and Robert Gordon’s College to win and qualify for this year’s international final which will be held at Long Beach City College in Long Beach, California.
Robert Gordon’s College placed second and Portlethen Academy finished third.
Alford Academy was awarded the Encouragement for Future Development award and Inverurie Academy picked up the prize for teamwork.
Their ROVs had to complete an environmental clean-up operation. They had to check for contaminants and then place a cap over a danger area.
Neil Stag, subsea project engineer with competition sponsor BP, believes the event was a great platform for the students. He said: “I was very impressed. The ROVs they produced were very clever. These students have shown a lot of technical imagination and that is what the competition needs.”
