Pupils from Banff Academy have been crowned as this year’s winners of an annual technology challenge.
Eight secondary schools participated at the final of North East Scotland College’s (Nescol) event this week when the academies pitted their top students against each other in head-to-head heats.
The competitions included simulations on welding, assembly and even rocket power.
And Banff Academy were named overall winners on the day, represented by William Bain and Kaitlyn Ironside.
The final for this year’s event, which is sponsored by oil firm Shell and Score Group, was held within Nescol’s new science and engineering centre which was opened earlier this year by Sir Ian Wood.
Neil Cowie, the college’s vice-principal, addressed the 16 pupils who took part.
He said: “It is a huge achievement for you to be selected as ambassadors for your schools.
“Not only were you best in class, but you were also deemed to be the best in school for this particular challenge, communicating effectively as teammates.”
As winners, William and Kaitlyn each received an iPad.
The runners-up, Richard Kecskemeti and Alix Stephen, from Peterhead Academy, each won a Fitbit Blaze.
Pupils from Fraserburgh, Huntly, Meldrum, Ellon, Mintlaw, Turriff and the Gordon Schools were all presented with Fitbits.
The technology challenge is in its fourteenth year and aims to encourage young people to consider engineering as a potential career option, engaging with more than 1,300 pupils each year.
A spokeswoman for Nescol said: “The competition is an example of how schools, the college and industry continue to work effectively and collaboratively together for the good of the young people living and learning in the north-east of Scotland.”
