The new Aset international oil and gas training academy, now housed in Aberdeen College’s Altens Centre, had its official opening yesterday.
It marked the academy’s relocation from the Minto Centre at Altens.
Aset (Aberdeen Skills and Enterprise Training) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the college, and is held in high regard globally for the specialist training it has provided for the oil and gas, marine, electrical, transport and other sectors since 1993. The move to the Altens Centre, in Hareness Road, has meant an investment of more than £10million.
Ceremonial duties at the official opening were carried out by Oil and Gas UK chief executive Malcolm Webb, who said Aset’s commitment would help the UK’s energy industry meet the challenge of skill shortages. He added: “With up to 24billion barrels of oil and gas still to be extracted from the UK continental shelf and far more from other oil and gas provinces around the world, the demand for highly skilled people is here to stay.”
It is hoped Aset’s new home will deliver increased opportunities for the business and college to share resources and assets plus work together on more projects. Aberdeen College principal Rob Wallen said: “The college and Aset have both invested significant sums of money in upgrading key facilities.”
Aset chief executive Atholl Menzies said: “We are very clear about our long-term objectives and . . . we are prepared to adapt and customise our products to suit both local and overseas demand.”
