Energy service firm 3sun Group said yesterday it planned to expand its north-east workforce to meet increasing demand for its services.
The recruitment drive at 3sun’s Westhill offices has already started, with Neil Tawse appointed to the newly created role of business-development director.
He joins 3sun from Aker Subsea, where he has worked for 14 years and been vice-president of controls and subsea production systems for two-and-a-half years.
Graham Hacon, 3sun’s managing director, said: “Neil has over 30 years of varied and successful experience within the oil and gas industry and will play a major role in our plans to strengthen our presence in the north-east to service the oil and gas sector. He has a wealth of industry knowledge and, importantly for us, he is highly focused on health and safety and brings an impressive safety record with him.”
The firm, which employs only a handful of people in the north-east, plans to add up to 18 people at Westhill in the next 18 months.
It expects a further 12-18 jobs will be created at its Great Yarmouth headquarters “as a direct result of business being generated by Neil and his team”.
The group is also seeking an office and manufacturing site in the Aberdeen area to support its expansion plans.
Mr Tawse, who started his career as an apprentice in general instrumentation at Stoneywood Paper Mill, in Aberdeen, said: “Joining a fast-growth, dynamic company such as 3sun Group is an exciting move.
“The mix of inspection, oil and gas and renewables work will be a fresh challenge for me and I look forward to driving the company’s growth forward in these areas.
“I feel I am joining the company at a pivotal time as global expansion plans are kicking off with the launch of additional bases in the UK and Europe, while plans are in place to open further global bases within two years.”
The group comprises 3sun – a supplier of instrument and control products and services – and 3sun Inspection Services, which offers equipment inspection and testing services to customers in the renewable-energy sector.
It also owns Oban-based Dawson Energy, which delivers installation, maintenance and inspection services for wind turbines.
Turnover at the group last year totalled £6.5million, up from £2.4million in 2010, and this year it is targeting £12million.
It has 175 people working from offices at Great Yarmouth, Oban and Bergen, Norway, as well as Westhill.
