A young oil and gas engineer has been named apprentice of the year by an Aberdeen training centre.
Gordon Forbes, an 18-year-old trainee mechanic at oilfield service group Aker Solutions, took the top prize in Tullos Training’s annual awards.
Mr Forbes is one of 600 modern apprentices on the books at Tullos Training, which takes on 150 new trainees every year.
He said: “This is a huge achievement as apprentices are highly sought after by employers across the industry.
“I was attracted to the oil and gas industry because I felt that it was an area where if you work hard, you can progress up the career ladder, and the rewards are limitless.
“My aim is to become a mechanical engineer after completing my apprenticeship.
“The practical skills I am learning now will help to put me on the road to success.”
Also among the winners was Callum Ferguson, of Phase NRG, who picked up the Divex achievement award; David Allan, of Arjo Wiggins Fine Papers, who was named young engineer of the year; and Gary Pithie, of Wartsila, who received the GTM award.
Tullos Training chief executive Iain Garrett said: “During the last year the recession has had a profound effect on us all.
“It is vital that we continue to train and educate our young people, so they are better-placed to meet the fast moving demands of the global economy and workplace.”
