The engineers of the future were given a head start on how to pursue their careers at an event in Aberdeen.
Transition Rendezvous – Engineer the Future brought students together with industry professionals for tips on everything from their CVs to how to excel as engineers.
It is the second time the event has been held in the Granite City. It was run by AFBE-UK, a group aimed at encouraging people into and supporting people in engineering.
Speakers were Dennis Pinto, managing director of Caledonian Flow Systems and vice chairman of the Energy Institute Highlands and Islands branch, John Hargreaves, managing director of Peak Global Consultants and chairman of the north-east branch of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, Sena Sedowofia, a Perth-based electrical engineer at SSE and Adesiji Anjorin, a corrosion engineer at Oceaneering.
They gave their views on what it takes to be a good engineer.
Sedowofia said key qualities an aspiring engineer should demonstrate were enthusiasm, awareness of a company’s core values and targets, risk awareness and safety consciousness and technical capability.
Pinto said to create a new generation of scientists and engineers capable of creating sustainable communities the following were needed: education, encouragement of critical thinking, interdisciplinary learning and the promotion of skills as wells as knowledge.
He said: “We must be part of Solutions and not part of the problems. Only when we see our communities as an interconnected system will we have step-changes required to create a sustainable future. Engineers must show courage and resilience in their ideas. No Idea is a bad idea.”
Hargreaves said the qualities of a good engineer were being organised, clear and concise in presenting work, knowledgeable, a good Communicator, pragmatic and to have integrity.
Anjorin also said it was important for job seekers to show their extra curricular activities as well as academic expertise.
